In King Solomon's Mines, Alão Quartelmar, an experienced elephant and lion hunter and ivory trader in Southern Africa, ventures to write an account of his fantastic experiences, thus breaking the routine of his son Henrique's workdays as a medical intern in England. It was on his way to Christmas that he would encounter two figures from the metropolis, Baron Henrique Curtis and First Lieutenant John Good of the Royal Navy. The two would become his companions on the most extraordinary of expeditions: to discover the whereabouts of Curtis's brother, Jorge Neville, and with him the location of King Solomon's mines, described in an old 16th-century Portuguese document.
