In Cold Blood, which tells the story of the murder of the Clutter family in Holcomb, Kansas, and the perpetrators of the massacre. Capote decided to write about the subject after reading the newspaper article about the family's murder in 1959. Almost six years later, in 1965, the story was published in four parts in The New Yorker magazine. Besides narrating the extermination of farmer Herbert Clutter, his wife Bonnie, and their children Nancy and Kenyon, the book reconstructs the trajectory of the murderers. Perry Smith and Dick Hickock planned the crime believing they would seize a fortune, but found practically nothing. Arrested and convicted, both died on the gallows in 1965. The intense relationship Capote established with his sources was decisive for the success of the work. In addition to spending more than a year in the Holcomb region, investigating and talking to residents, he got close to the criminals and gained their trust. He drew a human and eloquent profile of the two "boys," as he used to call them.
