This is the first book Stephen Hawking wrote for a general audience. In it, he presents, in language accessible to all, the latest discoveries of astrophysicists. Tracing the major theories of the cosmos from Galileo to Einstein, recounting the latest discoveries in cosmology, and explaining the nature of black holes, he then proposes to take up the greatest challenge of modern science: the search for a theory that can reconcile general relativity and quantum mechanics.
