Chocolate

Vianne is a single mother who arrives in the small village with her daughter and opens a chocolate shop. The alternating chapters, sometimes in Vianne's voice, sometimes in Father Reynaud's, create great dramatic tension. "We are all divided inside," says Joanne. "Father Reynaud is a kind of anorexic. He refuses to eat and tortures himself by spending hours in front of the butcher's window. He is repressive; his severity towards others is based on the fact that he deeply hates himself." It is against this thinking that "Chocolat" rebels, defending the small pleasures of life, in this case gastronomic ones, and the right to be different, in a small village closed to outsiders (even the gypsies, who appear there with their music and other ways of life, are ostracized), and which, in a way, challenges the established power.
