Originally written as a dialogue with his friend Evodius, this is one of the fundamental works of Augustinian thought. The text is divided into three books that address the origin of moral evil (sin), arguing that evil does not come from God, but from the abuse and distorted use of human freedom. In Book II, Augustine also presents one of his most famous rational proofs of the existence of God.
